Royal North Shore Hospital

RNSH Health Information Services implemented Document Imaging in May 2012. Scanning processes for Emergency, Inpatients and Outpatients paperwork is now business as usual. The impact of scanning on HIS clerks, clinical coders and clinicians has been significant. Forms reconciliation, interfaces with ICT, and education and training continue to rank high among HIS responsibilities. A number of other processes were implemented alongside this new business process, including eMR scheduling, CHOC, Activity Based Funding, HIS and Administrative services restructures, extended operating hours, and relocation to a brand new Hospital. The RNSH site visit will endeavour to provide you with an overview of the electronic, and scanned, medical records impact on HIS, clinicians and coders.

Sydney Children’s Hospitals

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) incorporates The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, Bear Cottage, the Newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS), the Pregnancy and newborn Services Network (PSN) and the Children’s Court Clinic. The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network is the largest network of hospital and services for children in Australia. Each year our services manage:

  • 51,000 inpatient admissions
  • 92,000 Emergency Department presentations
  • Over one million outpatient service visits

SCHN shares a mutual goal of providing the best patient care and shares a vision of ‘Children first and foremost’. As a proud and integral part of SCHN, we are looking forward to meeting with you and show casing the SCH Health Information Unit (SCH HIU), the health care record management service. The HIU team manages all new and return patients’ paper health care records by scanning and indexing these records into the eMR. The HIU is much more than just a scanning department, it is the future support of the eMR users to access and manage new patient information and it is helping to create a bridge from the history of paper records to the next stage of electronic records where patient information will be entered directly into the eMR. Now scanned records are available to clinicians via the eMR, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Eliminating the need to request files, reducing storage costs, providing a greener approach to the environment and most importantly, direct information access critical for our patient care when and where clinicians need it, wherever patients may present.
