WW5949 - Clinical Coder - (Part-time) - Calvary John James Hospital, Deakin, ACT

Calvary John James Hospital is a fully accredited 155 beds,with more than 21,300 admissions /year utilizing various casemix including Orthopaedic surgery, Pediatric and General surgery, ENT, Rehabilitation, General Medicine, Intensive care and Day Surgery.

An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced Clinical coder to join a small team of coders within the Health Information Services section. This position will be based at Calvary John James Hospital, however from time to time Calvary may require you to work at other locations, including client or other Group member locations or if Calvary relocates its premises in the future.

Note: Screening of applicant’s coding skills may be undertaken with a coding exam using the ICD-10-AM 8th Edition ebooks

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely and accurate coding of inpatient episodes using current edition of International Classification of Disease-10-AM/ACHI/ACS
  • Validate accuracy of Diagnostic Related Groups allocation
  • Optimize coding throughput and quality whilst adhering to data submission deadlines
  • Participate in coding audits, mentoring team members and other data quality activities
  • Flexibility to perform other administrative duties should the need arise


  • Completion of Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or equivalent, or Clinical Coding qualification from HIMAA
  • Minimum 2 years coding experience
  • Knowledge of Casemix Funding principles and Health fund contracts (desirable not essential)
  • Demonstrated experience with electronic coding products utilizing ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS. Note that 3MCodefinder is not utilized in this facility.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • The ability to work across ACT Calvary sites on occasion to ensure that coding deadlines are met
