We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Clinical Coding Manager to lead the clinical coding team for our business. The role has overall responsibility for ensuring the efficient and effective management, leadership and organisation of Iron Mountain HIM & Professional Services, including the clinical coding team. The Clinical Coding Manager will work closely with the National Sales Manager and Business Development team in the design, development and implementation of auditing, training and education programs for experienced and trainee clinical coders, both within the HIM & Professional Services Team as part of contractual obligations to client sites.

Responsibilities / Duties: 
  • Manage and provide leadership for the HIM & Professional Services team, including standards and data quality
  • Continually assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the clinical coding service and where necessary, develop business and operational plans to identify strategic planning and business activities for clinical coding
  • Develop and implement strategies, policies, procedures and new processes or systems as required to ensure clinical coding services provided supports the needs of client sites, and meets benchmarks for output and quality
  • Monitor clinical coder output at client sites and where coding benchmarks are not met, ensure investigation and corrective actions to meet client needs are implemented.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for the HIM & Professional Services team that maintain and improve the current skill set of the clinical coding workforce.
  • Work jointly with the National Sales Manager- Health to maintain the HIM & Professional Services workforce, including recruitment and selection, orientation, rostering, leave management, training, annual performance management and succession planning
  • Respond to and analyse clinical coding data quality issues as identified at client sites through quality reporting tools such as PICQ and other edit reports.
  • Prepare briefs and submissions to Iron Mountain Management related to clinical coding as required.
  • Keep abreast of research into diagnoses and operations in order to make informed clinical coding decisions.
  • Maintain regular electronic and personal contact with the HIM & Professional Services team, and work with the National Sales Manager – Health to supervise, mentor, motivate, encourage and support the HIM & Professional Services team in their continuing education and performance as required.
  • Remain up to date with current developments in clinical coding, classification systems, casemix by actively networking with colleagues, reviewing literature, attending seminars and conferences where applicable, and participating in professional association activities.
  • Work with the National Sales Manager on the design, development, co-ordination and delivery of auditing, training and education programs for experienced and trainee clinical coders, both within the HIM & Professional Services Team & as part of contractual obligations to Client sites.
  • Develop clinical coding resource tools for HIM & Professional Services staff & client sites
  • Provision of advanced clinical coding services to client sites, as rostered, with a standard of quality that is both accurate and reliable.
  • Maintain professional & advanced clinical coding knowledge and skills at a senior level by regularly participating in hands on clinical coding in a large teaching hospital and in professional development activities
  • Provide specialist advice and expertise in relation to clinical coding with particular focus on ICD-10-AM code assignment, DRGs, documentation guidelines and the Australian Coding Standards to client site team members to assist in their provision of an efficient and effective clinical coding service.
  • Assist Client sites in the interpretation and analysis of casemix / hospital activity, clinical data and statistics as required.
  • Act as a clinical coding specialist in decisions relating to clinical coding when queries arise from clinicians and clinical coders.
  • Development of policies and procedures relating to the clinical coding team and ensure these are documented and communicated to relevant staff.
  • Provide expert advice to clinical coders to resolve complex coding queries and code assignment conflicts and act as an authoritative reference point for clinical coders and clinicians in relation to best documentation and clinical coding practice and resolution of clinical coding issues.

  • Provide a customer focused service with attention to detail and accuracy in the provision of clinical information

  • Knowledge of the clinical coding workforce and demonstrated skills managing a clinical coding team.
  • Expert level understanding of Clinical Coding, Casemix, DRGs and Activity Based Funding models and their application within the health system.
  • Ability to analyse, document, communicate and produce high level reports,briefs, presentations and quality reports of results of audits to a range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and organisation skills with high level communication and attention to detail and the ability to work both autonomously and within a team.
  • Effective leadership, management and organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise as well as lead and maintain effective teams to meet targets and deadlines.
  • Skills interpreting, monitoring and evaluating policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • High level proficiency in the use of office computer applications including various PAS systems, 3MCodefinder, EIS TurboCoder, and in Microsoft Office Applications
  • High level experience and competency in clinical coding with at least 5 years experience in a complex tertiary level facility using ICD-10-AM with a thorough understanding of the Australian Coding Standards
  • Demonstrated understanding of the relationship between Clinical Coding, Casemix, DRG classification systems and Activity Based Funding models, with experience in developing effective strategies to address issues arising in an Activity Based Funding environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting quality improvement activities in relation to clinical coded data, including coding audits, ACBA or similar audit tools, error correction, analysing and presenting data.
  • Ability to analyse, document, communicate and report the results of audits to a range of stakeholders including client site facility managers, clinical coders, clinicians and other health professionals where necessary
  • Ability to provide input, interpret, monitor and evaluate policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of computerised PAS and record control systems, 3M Codefinder software, EIS TurboCoder.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to develop and present clinical coding information and education sessions to a relevant stakeholders, including clinicians.
  • Proven effective leadership, management and organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise as well as lead and maintain effective teams to meet targets and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in training of clinical coders and conducting quality improvement activities, including auditing of clinical coding and analysis and resolution of data quality issues

  • Completion of (or currently undertaking or willing to undertake) recognised qualifications in clinical coding auditing
  • Completion of Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40110, or willingness to enrol and complete same.
  • Experience on the development and presentation of clinical coding training programs and the ability to use varying communication strategies in order to provide effective training
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products to complete high level reports, briefs, presentations and quality reports.
