WW5970 - Clinical Coder - (Full-time/ Part-time) - Canberra Hospital ACT Health, Garran, ACT


  • Pay Rate: Remuneration value up to $86,112 per annum comprising salary between $62,113 - $76,995 plus employer contribution to superannuation


An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated clinical coder to join the coding team at Canberra Hospital. Part-time or Full-time positions are available and suitable applicants may also be considered for remote coding.

Our Clinical Coders access scanned clinical records on-line for data abstraction and assign codes using on-line encoding software.

Canberra Hospital offers free parking, generous salary packaging provisions and flexible working arrangements. Applicants will be required to complete a coding examination to assess coding competency as a component of the recruitment process and must be Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Responsibilities / Duties: 
  1. Abstract relevant information from clinical records and assign complete and accurate codes using the current edition of ICD-10-AM and ACHI in accordance with Australian Coding Standards. Successfully progress through the department’s internal Clinical Specialty coder training program.
  2. Enter, edit and maintain the Patient Administration System, identify discrepancies between the PAS and patient records and feedback through appropriate channels. Utilise encoder software to perform online grouping of coded data through the AR-DRG Grouper and validate the accuracy of DRG allocation, cost weight and length of stay.
  3. Ensure completeness of records and accuracy of documentation for coding purposes and communicate effectively with health care professionals on this aspect.
  4. Optimise coding throughput (minimum of four records per hour) and quality whilst adhering to casemix submission deadlines and in-house reporting timeframes.
  5. Participate in random and specialty specific re-coding audits and other coding quality improvement activities.
  6. Maintain coding skills and highly developed knowledge of clinical disease processes and diagnostic and procedural terminology through attendance at educational sessions, coding meetings, research and review of current coding and related health literature.
  7. Ensure provision of appropriate clinical information in accordance with statutory requirements, e.g. Cancer Notification.
  8. Undertaking other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the section.


Essential: 
  • Completion of an approved HIMAA clinical coding certificate course or equivalent. You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to apply.
  • Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment Police check.


Desirable: 
  • A minimum of three years clinical coding experience using the current edition of ICD-10-AM covering a broad range of tertiary level casemix with proven ability to code an average of 4 - 5 records per hour.
