An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated full time Health Information Manager to join the clinical coding team at Canberra Hospital. This role is a combined coding/auditing/educator role. In addition to clinical coding responsibilities, you will also be required to conduct regular coding audits and provide ongoing coder education to the team. You will play a key role in determining appropriate DRG allocation, optimizing coding throughput, ensuring targets and key performance indicators are met.

Our Clinical Coders access scanned clinical records on-line for data abstraction and assign codes using on-line encoding software. Applicants will be required to complete a coding examination to assess coding competency and must be Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Responsibilities / Duties: 
  1. Abstract and verify relevant information in the clinical record, assign accurate classification codes using the current edition of ICD-10-AM and ACHI in accordance with Australian Coding Standards and perform associated duties including:
    • Enter, edit and maintain a computerised information system
    • Validate accuracy of DRG allocation, cost weight and length of stay for coded episodes
    • Ensure completeness of records and accuracy of documentation for coding purposes and communicate effectively with health care professionals regarding documentation requirements and the impact on DRG allocation
    • Provide coded information and advice on DRG assignment
    • Process medical information in accordance with statutory requirements
  2. Provide comprehensive clinical coding audit services to management around activity based funding and clinical classification. Provide recommendations and feedback as appropriate.
  3. Provide training, education, mentoring, support and development to Clinical Coding staff.
  4. Liaise with clinical staff as appropriate to improve clinical record documentation to optimise coding accuracy and DRG allocation, whilst adhering to Casemix submission deadlines and in-house reporting timeframes.
  5. Maintain coding skills through attendance at educational sessions, research and study of current coding and health literature and contact with clinicians.
  6. Assist with planning and implementation of changes to coding and grouping systems.
  7. Undertaking other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the section.



Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment Police check.


Essential: 
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or equivalent qualification or eligibility for admission to full membership of the Health Information Management Association of Australia.


Desirable: 
  • A minimum of three years clinical coding experience using the current edition of ICD-10-AM, covering a broad range of Casemix at the tertiary facility level, with ability to accurately code an average of 4 – 5 records per hour desirable.
