WW6013 - Clinical Coding Educator / Auditor - (Full-time) - Health Western Sydney LHD - Westmead Hospital, Westmead, NSW

The WSLHD Clinical Coding Educator/ Auditor works within the WSLHD Clinical Coding Education & Audit team as a key member of the WSLHD Clinical Coding Management team. The position is responsible for the overall management, planning, design, development, implementation & delivery of auditing, training and education activities for experienced and trainee clinical coders & for working with the clinical documentation specialist team to ensure clinical documentation is complete, unambiguous & reflective of the accurate complexity for each episode of care. This position is expected to provide expert advice and information on clinical coding quality activities to maximise revenue through an improved understanding of coding, casemix and DRGs and will provide feedback to WSLHD district clinical coders, clinicians, costing and reporting teams to continually improve coding quality and NWAU targets, in consultation with the WSLHD District Clinical Coding Manager & WSLHD Clinical Documentation Specialist Manager.

This position is integral to the effective delivery of the WSLHD Clinical Coding Quality plan, and includes auditing, coding review and regular consultation with key stakeholders to sustain coding improvements across WSLHD. The position will be responsible for extracting data from reporting platforms such as iPM, Aladdin & HRT, and for implementing and using available coding audit tools including PICQ to review, trend, benchmark and evaluate coding quality. The Clinical Coding Educator/ Auditor will be responsible for measuring and sustaining key performance indicators (KPIs) in consultation with the WSLHD Clinical Coding Management team to ensure coding quality is optimal and compliant with coding standards across district facilities.

Selection criteria:

  1. Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or equivalent tertiary qualification, and/or relevant experience with eligibility for membership of HIMAA
  2. Completion of (or currently undertaking or willing to undertake) recognised qualifications in clinical coding audit.
  3. High level experience and competency and extensive recent clinical coding experience at tertiary level using ICD- 10-AM & ACHI with a thorough understanding of the Australian Coding Standards and a high level understanding of Casemix, DRGs and Activity Based Funding models and their application within the health system
  4. Demonstrated ability to lead, conduct, measure, validate and sustain coding quality improvement activities in relation to clinically coded data, including coding audits, ACBA or similar audit tools, error correction, analysis and presentation of results.
  5. Demonstrated experience in developing, designing and delivering education and training programs related to clinical coding
  6. Ability to extract data from source systems & data warehouses and implement and use available coding audit tools including PICQ to review, trend, analyse, benchmark and evaluate coding quality
  7. Ability to independently feedback individual coding quality results to coding team members and clinicians to ensure coding is optimalDemonstrated interpersonal, communication, prioritisation and organisation skills to communicate coding quality results to key stakeholders
