WW6024 - Clinical Coding Quality Manager - (Full-time) - Southern NSW LHD - Queanbeyan Hospital Services, Queanbeyan, NSW

The Coding Quality Manager is responsible for the design, development and implementation of audits to maintain the quality of coded data and identify education requirements for coders, clinicians and administrative staff. The position holder will
provide mentorship to the Clinical Coders in their Cluster and will work collaboratively with the Health Information Managers in the LHD.

Responsibilities / Duties: 
  • Conduct regular coding audits and monitor coding quality
  • Provide mentorship to the coding staff
  • Provide feedback to coding staff on their performance and identify areas for further education.
  • Advise the Health Information Manager on the performance of individual coders
  • Assist the Health Information Manager for the provision of education to coders, clinicians and administrative staff
  • Make recommendations to the Manager, Performance Analysis and Casemix on clinical coding improvement strategies and escalate any areas of noncompliance with internal or external reporting and performance obligations
  • Develop, implement and maintain clinical documentation guidelines for clinicians and other health professionals
  • Organise meetings with clinicians to discuss DRG and documentation issues
  • Review health service DRG and coded data (e.g. PICQ errors) to identify possiblecoding errors and take action to minimise these
  • Provide advice on coding queries
  • Identify Admitted Patient Data Collection errors and educate relevant staff on how to correct
  • Educate clinical coders of updates to the ICD-10-AM classification, Australian Coding Standards, coding decisions from the Australian Consortium for Classification of Disease (ACCD) and NSW Clinical Coding Leadership Group, and enhancements in the electronic medical record (eMR) which affect clinical coding practice
  • Provide education to coding and clinical staff with a view to improving coding quality
  • Participate in local and District meetings, working parties and committees as required including the local ABF/M meetings
  • Develop and maintain policy and procedures in relation to coding quality
  • Assist in clinical coding if required
  • Participate in relevant meetings, working parties and committees regarding documentation, coding and Casemix / ABF
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Coding Manager and Clinical Information Manager within the scope of the classification.
  • Maintain professional clinical coding skills by regularly participating in clinical coding and professional development activities

  1. Demonstrated experience in Clinical Coding at an HIMAA Advanced level using ICD - 10-AM
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the DRG Classification and ABF with experience in developing effective strategies to address issues arising in an Activity Based Funding and Management environment.
  3. Demonstrated experience in providing education to a range of staff
  4. Demonstrated ability to conduct quality improvement activities, including auditing, analysis and resolution of data quality issues
  5. Demonstrated effective interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills with a focus on building and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of stakeholder groups.
  6. High level computer literacy with experience in a computerised patient administration system and 3M Code Finder plus sound knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite to enable to undertake reports and presentations
  7. Current Motor Vehicle Driver’s License and ability and willingness to travel for work purposes. The position will involve driving long distances and overnight stays.
