n response to our rapid grown, we have an exciting new opportunity for a Medicolegal Officer to join the team at our Corporate Office located in South Brisbane. This is a newly created role is responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the Medico-Legal Service at Icon Cancer Care in regard to release of information to internal and external customers in compliance with current legislations and Health Information Management (HIM) policies and procedures. Additionally, this position will also be responsible for undertaking a clinical coding of patient admissions using ICD-10-AM. This role will report to the Senior Health Information Manager on a full-time permanent basis.


About the person we’re going to hire:

The successful applicant will have demonstrated previous experience in the collection, retention and release of medical record information to internal and external customers. They will have the ability to code accurately and in a timely manner using ICD-10AM, as well as a sound knowledge of AR-DRGs in a Private Hospital setting. They should also possess excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively within a team environment. They will be IT tech savvy with a sound knowledge of computer based software applications including Word/Excel/database management systems is also required.


Responsibilities / Duties: 
  • Coordinates release of information in accordance with relevant Acts, including the Privacy Act.
  • Understands and maintains privacy and confidentiality
  • Instructs through Privacy/Confidentiality presentations to Icon personnel in the collection, use and release of patient information
  • Undertakes clinical coding (ICD-10–AM) and diagnostic related grouping
  • Completion of Cancer Registry notifications within agreed timeframes
  • Correction of coding errors identified either via internal audits or via external data submissions.
  • Timely transfer of relevant activity data to internal and external third parties including government departments using a secure method of transfer


Essential: 

Mandatory

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health Information Management
  • Eligibility for full membership of HIMAA


Desirable: 

Skills & Experience:
To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Previous experience in the collection, retention and release of medical record information to internal and external customers
  • Previous experience coding in a Health facility
  • Ability to code accurately and in a timely manner using ICD-10AM, and a sound knowledge of AR-DRGs in a Private Hospital setting
  • Sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer hardware and Windows based and medical practice software packages and troubleshooting same
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, effectively self-organise, and achieve defined goals by developing technical and communication skills
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication and collaborative problem solving skills when managing difficult and sensitive issues with team members and other customers
