Health Information Services is seeking applications from suitably qualified Health Information Managers or Clinical Coders for a challenging yet rewarding vacancy at Cabrini. This is a newly created position and is an excellent opportunity to establish an organisation-wide education program.

Responsibilities / Duties: 
  • Manages coding education activities to improve accuracy of coded data and participates as a member of the coding and HIS Executive team.
  • Implements and conducts regular coding education to ensure optimal coding accuracy and revenue maximisation.
  • Distributes appropriate coding advice received from third parties.
  • Develops an education and training regime for existing coding staff to ensure knowledge standards are maintained at an appropriate level.
  • Conducts training of new coding staff to assess initial competency and implements an appropriate training regime to enable coders to perform at agreed levels of accuracy.
  • Identifies appropriate benchmarking activities and partners and conducts benchmarking as necessary.
  • Conducts regular coder team meetings with a focus on coder education.
  • Invites clinical staff to conduct training sessions for coders on relevant subjects to improve knowledge base.
  • Liaise with medical and nursing staff to educate on documentation requirements with the aim to improve information received for coding and ongoing care purposes. This liaison would include presentations at appropriate forums. HIS has dedicated medical staff available for documentation consultation.
  • Work in conjunction with HIS staff responsible for Performance Indicators for Coding Quality (PICQ) audits to improve coding accuracy.
  • Works in conjunction with the Coding Leadership Team to ensure that coding is performed in accordance with Australian / Victorian Coding Standards.
  • Undertakes ICD-10-AM morbidity coding in accordance with Australian / Victorian Coding Standards at and accuracy rate of 90% for DRG allocation and 85% for coding allocation. The coding throughput target per month is 400 separations or 1,200 bed days with a variable casemix of day and long stay patients.
  • Participates in achieving coding deadlines, specifically end of month and financial year requirements.
  • Is able to analyse and understand coded data in order to advise the Director and other Cabrini staff on its content when required.
  • Work in conjunction with the Director and other Cabrini staff to improve medical record documentation, which may include implementing technology that assists in improving the quality and quantity of this documentation.

  • Qualifications in Health Information Management or Clinical Coding (or equivalent);
  • Appropriate years of coding experience in an acute environment;
  • Coder education experience with a passion to teach;
  • Demonstrated high-level communication skills;
  • Ability to adapt and lead in an evolving work environment;
  • Disciplined, organised, innovative and structured in work practice;
