Forensic Mental Health is a specialist area within the Mental Health service system.
The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community. These services are delivered through three streams - Inpatient Services at Thomas Embling Hospital, Community Services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service and Prison Based Services at several locations.

There are currently 2 full-time, ongoing Health Information Manager positions available at Forensicare.

  • 1 position is located at Thomas Embling Hospital in Fairfield.
  • 1 position is located within Forensicare's Prison Mental Health Services.

Thomas Embling Hospital operates a 116 bed facility providing acute care, rehabilitation and continuing care services.

Forensicares provide Prison Based Services at the following locations:

  • Ravenhall Correctional Centre
  • Port Phillip Prison
  • Melbourne Assessment Prison
  • Dame Phyllis Frost Centre
  • Metropolitan Remand Centre

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Health Information Manager is responsible for the operational management of the Health Information Service at Forensicare's Prison Based Services / Thomas Embling Hospital.

This role is the key resource and contact person for Senior Clinical and Management Staff, in relation to Forensicare Health Information Service matters.

Duties Include:

  • Coding of inpatient episodes (Thomas Embling Hospital) / prison bed based services episodes, in accordance with Australian and Victorian Coding standards.
  • Work collaboratively with the HIM Team at Forensicare and contribute to the strategic planning and policy development relating to Health Information Services.
  • Ensure appropriate systems and processes are in place to ensure all accreditation criteria are met for Health Information Management.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a suite of service Key Performance Indicators.
  • Provide leadership to the Health Information workforce.
  • Undertake quality improvement activities relating to service specific Health Information.


  • Bachelor of Health Information Management or equivalent.
  • Previous coding experience in accordance with Australian and Victorian Coding Standards.
  • Previous experience working with the Rapid/CMI and Patient Administration Systems.
  • Excellent organisational time management and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of clinical data with the ability to prepare and present reports.


  • Previous experience working with scanned/electronic medical record systems.
  • Previous experience managing and developing a Health Information Service Team.
