You will be responsible to the Manager, Clinical Coding Service for the timely and accurate translation of medical record diagnosis and procedure into ICD-10-AM 10th edition codes. The coding information produced will be used for statistical analysis, epidemiology, hospital planning, research, and for the auditing of quality patient care. An important end-product of the coding process is the assignment of AR-DRG's (Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups) upon which case mix funding for inpatients is dependent.

As a Trainee, you will be mentored by an experienced Clinical Coder for guidance and progress through the training program to take on more complex cases while maintaining speed and accuracy. A structured training program will be followed where you will be expected to abstract information from the medical records, use your initiative and judgment, apply specific knowledge and skills and apply coding related skills. As required, you will liaise with the assigned Coding Mentor, fellow Coders and with the Manager Coding Services regarding queries or problems in determining the appropriate codes in order to ensure and maintain consistency.

Demonstrating successful completion of an approved Medical Terminology Course and successful commencement or completion of an approved ICD-10-AM Coding Course, you will have the ability to extract information from a medical record and integrate and interpret this information to produce complete morbidity data. With the ability to work independently and within a team environment, you will possess good initiative, sound organisational and time management skills, and the ability to prioritise workload and perform under pressure with demanding deadlines.
