Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for full-time and part-time enthusiastic and experienced Health Information Managers/ Clinical Coders to join our growing Casemix team.


Responsibilities / Duties: 

The principal roles are:

  • To provide Austin health with Casemix information by ensuring accurate and timely completion of morbidity classification and participation in unit meetings.
  • To participate in the internal audit process of the Casemix Unit, in order to improve coding quality.

Essential: 

To be successful in this role you must possess the following:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or other equivalent qualification and eligibility for full membership to the Health Information Management Association of Australia.
  • Excellent clinical coding skills using ICD-10-AM and a good understanding of casemix / DRGs.
  • Ability to determine priorities and organise workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work well as member of a large team.
  • Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well developed problem solving skills and the ability to resolve conflict.
  • Knowledge of legislation, policies and standards relevant to Health Information Services.
  • Knowledge of medical record systems including computer systems.
  • Possession of the following personal qualities: motivation, flexibility, initiative, reliability and professionalism.
  • Experience and proficiency with coding medical records in ICD-10-AM 10th edition


Desirable: 
  • A sound understanding of information technology including clinical systems and applications relevant to the Management of rostering and risk management reporting or as required for the role and/or department.
  • A minimum of one year experience coding in a hospital environment.
  • Experience coding with a scanned medical record.
