WW6317 - Expressions of Interest - Advanced Clinical Coder - (Full-time) - Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital, Brisbane, QLD

Be a key contributor toward the provision of essential clinical data to Children’s Health Queensland by classifying inpatient episodes using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM).

The purpose of the Advanced Clinical Coder is to accurately assign specific morbidity and procedural classifications to admitted patient episodes to meet data reporting requirements of Queensland Health.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Liaise with clinicians regarding clarifying clinical documentation
  • Identify discrepancies between the health information systems and patient records and feedback through appropriate channels
  • Actively contribute to quality improvement activities, education activities and other initiatives within the clinical coding team
  • Act as mentor to less experienced coders
  • Complete cancer registry notifications

The successful person should be able to demonstrate:

  • An expert ability to assign ICD-10-AM and ACHI codes to admitted patient episodes from a wide variety of clinical specialties in accordance with Australian Coding Standards. (Note: This will require you to sit a coding exam)
  • High level knowledge of state and national developments in ICD-10-AM, activity based funding and the application of these within healthcare management.
  • High level interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills for effective liaison with staff, including clinicians, in relation to clinical coding, documentation and activity based funding.
  • Demonstrated high level commitment to continuous quality improvement, and experience with the implementation and management of quality management activities in relation to coded data.
  • The ability to consistently achieve deadlines, appropriately prioritise workload and work effectively as part of a team

While not mandatory, a degree in Health Information Management (or equivalent), intermediate or advanced level ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS clinical coding qualification (or equivalent), and minimum 5 years coding experience within a large health care facility is highly desirable.
