The maximum combined salary and ARIn amount for this position is $120,000 per annum comprising

  • Annual salary between $100,462 to $108,140 and
  • Group Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARIn): $11,860 to $19,538


The ARIn will be reviewed every 12 months where the ARIn may be terminated or adjusted under the terms of the ARIn policy. The current ARIn is due for review 30 June 2019. In addition to the above salary and ARIn ACT Health employees will also receive employer contribution to superannuation (up to 10.50%) and annual leave loading (17.50%). ACT Health is looking for an experienced and motivated HIM/Coder to manage the Clinical Coding team at Canberra Hospital. This role will be offered in a permanent and full time capacity and will be based at the Canberra Hospital campus, at Woden in the ACT. Reporting to the Director, Clinical Records Service, you will provide manager level leadership and operational management of the clinical coding team in accordance with best practice, to facilitate the achievement of ACT health’s mission and strategic objectives. The clinical coding team is responsible for the accurate, timely and optimised clinical coding of all inpatient episodes for the Canberra Hospital (tertiary/acute) and the University of Canberra Hospital (rehabilitation) using on-line scanned records and encoding software.

The Clinical Coding Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the Clinical Coding Section and ensuring the accurate coding of documented diagnoses and procedures and identification and rectification of documentation deficiencies at the time of coding, and managing the Sub and Non-Acute Patient (SNAP) Assessment Team. The Coding Manager will also be responsible for overseeing the Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist pilot program.

Responsibilities / Duties: 

Key accountabilities:

  • Provide effective leadership and manage all functions of the Canberra Hospital Clinical Coding Service to ensure quality, effective, efficient and risk-managed service delivery. Meet the business objectives and achieve the key performance indicators for the Clinical Coding Service.
  • Ensure an effective coding quality and Clinical Coder education program is in place that ensures the highest quality of coded data is produced.
  • Support ACT Health’s activities associated with clinical documentation improvement ensuring full engagement of the clinical coding team in implementation of clinical documentation improvement strategies.
  • Initiate, lead and effectively influence clinician understanding and engagement in clinical documentation requirements, clinical coding, DRG assignment and revenue optimisation.
  • Lead and/or participate in projects as required relating to clinical coding, classification and health record documentation.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the ICD-10-AM and AR-DRG classifications, hospital funding models, and industry news, directions and best practice relating to coding, CDI and management practices


To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated success in a leadership role and in managing a large team

You will also possess the following:

  • Possession of a qualification in Health Information Management or Clinical Coding is essential
  • Sound and current tertiary level clinical coding skills in ICD-10-AM and expert knowledge of the AR-DRG classification. Minimum of 5 years' experience in the clinical coding field.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively managing the clinical coding function including improving clinical coding timeliness and quality.
  • Demonstrated experience in inpatient revenue optimisation associated with clinical documentation improvement, clinical coding and DRG assignment.
