Pay Rate

  • The maximum combined salary and ARIn amount for this position is $115,000 per annum comprising:
    • Annual salary between $87,257 and $96,502 and
    • Group Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARIn): $18,498 to $27,743

NB: The ARIn will be reviewed every 12 months where the ARIn may be terminated or adjusted under the terms of the ARIn policy. The current ARIn is due for review 30 June 2019

In addition to the above salary and ARIn ACT Health employees will also receive employer contribution to superannuation (up to 10.50%) and annual leave loading (17.50%). Canberra Hospital also offers free parking, generous salary packaging provisions and flexible working arrangements.

An exciting opportunity exists for experienced and motivated full time or part time Health Information Managers to join the Clinical Coding team at Canberra Hospital. This role is a combined coding/auditing/educator role.

In addition to clinical coding responsibilities, you will also be required to train new coders, conduct regular coding audits, assess training needs and provide ongoing coder-education to the team.

You will play a key role in determining appropriate DRG allocation, optimising coding throughput, ensuring targets and key performance indicators are met, conducting coding quality audits involving interactive casemix reviews with clinical staff as well as providing training, mentoring and support to the clinical coding team. Part-time and full-time positions are available.

Our Clinical Coders access scanned clinical records on-line for data abstraction and assign codes using on-line encoding software and are responsible for the accurate and timely clinical coding of all inpatient episodes for the Canberra Hospital (tertiary/acute) and the University of Canberra Hospital (rehabilitation).

Applicants will be required to:

  • Complete a coding examination to assess coding competency
  • be Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents
  • submit written applications addressing the selection criteria

Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment Police check.

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or equivalent qualification or eligibility for admission to full membership of the Health Information Management Association of Australia.

  • A minimum of three years clinical coding experience using the current edition of ICD-10-AM, covering a broad range of Casemix at the tertiary facility level, with the ability to accurately code an average of 4 – 5 records per hour.
  • Previous experience completing coding audits and DRG reviews including liaison with clinical staff.
