    Are you a multi-skilled clinical specialist with the ability to work with staff from clinical, nursing, quality and coding teams?

    A high level opportunity exists for a Clinical Documentation Specialist with strengths in developing strong working relationships, knowledge of clinical documentation standards and experience in clinical coding and funding models to work for our professional hospital team.

    As a Clinical Documentation Specialist, your responsibilities will include facilitate the overall quality, completeness, timeliness and accuracy of clinical documentation in medical records to support:

    • The delivery of high quality patient care
    • The clinical coding process
    • Accreditation and adherence to quality standards
    • Appropriate reimbursement of revenue
    • Conduct extensive audits of active/open medical records and monitor the quality, completeness and accuracy of clinical documentation
    • Provide education to Nursing, Allied Health and Physicians on documentation guidelines to support clinical coding, quality, accreditation, billing and patient care
    • Lead clinical documentation performance improvement initiatives
    • Improve the quality and timeliness of all clinical documentation including discharge summaries


    John Fawkner Private Hospital is located in the north west of Melbourne. With 147 registered beds, an Emergency Department, 4 operating theatres, 5 bed ICU, 6 bed CCU and busy Day Procedure Unit the hospital provides a wide range of services to its community. The hospital specialises in orthopaedics, general surgery, general medicine, oncology, cardiology, urology, plastic surgery, ENT and gynaecology.


Essential: 

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Health Information Management or Clinical Documentation Specialist Certification
  • Extensive knowledge in clinical documentation standards
  • An in-depth knowledge of medical record documents and clinical documentation standards
  • Strong broad-based clinical knowledge across multiple specialties
  • Demonstrated understanding of clinical coding documentation requirements
  • Sound knowledge of Private Health fund model
  • Proven experience in accreditation standards and quality frameworks
  • Competency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel and Word)


Desirable: 
  • Certificate IV Training and Assessment
  • Post graduate management studies
  • Experience with Private Sector Funding & Reporting Models
