Combining clinical, coding and Cerner Millennium Electronic Medical Record
(EMR) knowledge the Clinical Documentation Improvement Analyst will work directly with clinical staff using the EMR to ensure that the documentation of patient’s severity and complexity of illness in the EMR is accurate, complete and reflects completely, the clinical treatment, findings, conditions, decisions, and diagnoses for the patient.

A key focus of the role will be to engage with clinical staff to review documentation while the patient is still in hospital, identifying improvement opportunities and providing education where required. Anticipated outcomes include a high standard of accuracy in clinical documentation, improvements in clinical coding workflow, improved clinical data capture and quality, a reduction in post discharge clinician coding queries, and more accurate DRG assignment and revenue optimisation.

This is a temporary position for a period of 12 months. People seeking both full time and part time employment are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a liaison between the Clinical Coding team, EMR team and clinical workforce for all EMR matters related to clinical documentation
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of clinical documentation requirements in the EMR, for clinical coding and DRG assignment
  • Review inpatient clinical records within 24-48 hours of patient admission and identify any gaps in clinical documentation that need clarification
  • Actively communicate with clinical staff at all levels to clarify information and to communicate documentation requirements for appropriate diagnoses based on severity of illness


  • A clinical and/or coding background of at least 5 years, with an interest in computerised workflows, clinical documentation, and Healthcare Informatics.
  • Knowledge or the capacity to develop a strong understanding of current clinical coding requirements •Knowledge of current clinical practices and motivation to continually improve and update these skills
