WW6437 - Senior HIM & Coding Educator - (Full-time) - Austin Health Heidelberg, VIC


Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, vascular surgery, respiratory and cardiac surgery.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for two enthusiastic and highly experienced Health Information Managers to join our Casemix Team. These are 2 newly created senior positions, which are both an integral part of the Casemix Department at Austin Health

The Coding Educator position, is an exciting new position which has been created to assist the growing Casemix Department at Austin Health with a new innovative way of training and providing education to new and current coding staff.

The Senior HIM position includes senior HIM duties such as VAED reporting, research requests and incorporates auditing and education


Responsibilities / Duties: 

Coding Educator:

  • To assist with the comprehensive and innovative education program for all Austin Health staff
  • To provide training for new staff and further develop current staff, ensuring ongoing education
  • To assist with the comprehensive internal coding auditing program, including optimisation of coding quality and provide feedback, as required
  • To provide Austin health with Casemix information by ensuring accurate and timely completion of morbidity classification and participation in unit meetings.



Senior HIM

  • To assist with the comprehensive internal coding auditing program, including optimisation of coding quality
  • To assist with the extensive education program for all staff, including internal and external staff
  • To assist with completion of mandatory reporting of the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED) and other senior duties
  • To provide Austin health with Casemix information by ensuring accurate and timely completion of morbidity classification and participation in Clinical Unit Meetings


Essential: 
  • A commitment to Austin Health values
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or other equivalent qualification and eligibility for full membership to the Health Information Management Association of Australia.
  • Excellent clinical coding skills using ICD-10-AM and a good understanding of Casemix and DRGs.
  • Ability to determine priorities and organise workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work well as a member of a large team.
  • Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well developed problem solving skills


Desirable: 
  • Experience working in a tertiary hospital
