An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic Health Information Manager to join our Mental Health Team.
The Mental Health Division is seeking an innovative, dynamic and enthusiastic Health Information Manager to join the team. This exciting opportunity is available for Health Information Managers with skills in data management, information analysis and health information systems. We require a person with great communication skills and attention to detail. These positions are fully supported by other Health Information Management staff and will provide the incumbent with experience in many levels of health information management and exposure to a large and complex health service.

The successful incumbent will be part of a team that provide support to the Mental Health Division Leadership Team, and will promote and sustain effective partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders, and work with multi-disciplinary teams across the Division to ensure service delivery needs are met.

A qualification in Health Information Management or equivalent is essential. These positions are an integral part of our friendly and dynamic team at Austin Health. The position encompasses a range of duties related to reporting, coding, mental health act processes, research, liaison with medical, nursing, allied health and administration staff.

Responsibilities / Duties: 

The principal duties of this position are:

  • To use Information Systems to generate reports on the services’ performance and to meet funding agreements
  • To assist with the extensive education program for all staff within the service
  • To ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act by monitoring data entry and completion of paperwork
  • To assist in overseeing the scanning process to ensure accuracy and timeliness
  • Assist in development and support of administrative processes to support the collection of health information
  • To assist with the completion of coding for the service and the internal coding auditing program


Essential: 
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or other equivalent qualification and eligibility for full membership to the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA).
  • Excellent clinical coding skills using ICD-10-AM 10th edition, and an understanding of Casemix and DRGs.
  • Ability to determine priorities and organise workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Experience in data management, use of reporting software
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work well as a member of a team.
  • Well developed problem solving skills and the ability to resolve conflict.
  • Possession of the following personal qualities: motivation, flexibility, initiative, reliability and professionalism.


Desirable: 
  • Previous experience with mandatory reporting
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Victoria 2014
  • Knowledge of the CMI
