WW6518 - Operations Manager / Deputy Director Health Information Service - ( Full-Time) - Canberra Hospital / Canberra Health Services - Garran, ACT


An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced and highly motivated Health Information Manager to fill the role of Deputy Director of the Health Information Service (HIS). The Deputy Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of this busy HIS including the management and supervision of multiple teams within the department, including:

  • Medico-legal/Release of Information
  • Patient registration/Duplicate resolution
  • Reception and Discharge Summary monitoring
  • Forms management
  • Research and Quality
  • Scanning team


The Deputy Director will provide high level operational management and must have strong leadership, and proven management skills. The successful applicant will also require well developed liaison and communication skills and highly effective organisational abilities.

Canberra Health Services includes two public hospitals and numerous health centres and ambulatory care facilities. Canberra Hospital is the ACT’s largest teaching and tertiary level referral hospital at 711 beds servicing a population of over 500,000 ACT and Southern NSW residents. The University of Canberra Hospital is a dedicated purpose built rehabilitation facility with a capacity of 140 beds

The current on-line electronic storage system for clinical records holds 24 years of scanned records, and services both hospitals. This system is due to be replaced in 2019 offering an exciting challenge for the HIS management team.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include:

  • all aspects of staff management including recruitment, training, rostering and performance management
  • monitoring of workflow and allocation of resources to meet service delivery requirements
  • workflow design and refinement in a hybrid clinical record environment (scanned and EMR)
  • evaluate organisational needs of record keeping, monitor performance of systems and analyse operational effectiveness
  • Undertake clinical documentation improvement initiatives, participate in audits and table results to various committees and assist the organisation to maintain accreditation
  • Overseeing the rationalisation and development of clinical record forms and e-form templates
  • contribute to the wider HIS operational management team


This is a full-time permanent position based at Canberra Hospital. Canberra Health Services offers free parking, generous salary packaging and superannuation and flexible working arrangements.

Eligibility/Other Requirements: Degree in Health Information Management or equivalent (e.g. Health Informatics) is essential, with a minimum of 3 years recent experience in a health information service of a medium to large hospital.
